Ove (Rolf Lassgård), an ill-tempered, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife’s grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his boisterous new neighbors. Yet from this inauspicious beginning, an unlikely friendship is formed, and we come to understand Ove’s past happiness and heartbreaks. What emerges is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it’s shared. Based on the bestselling novel by Fredrik Backman.

A Man Called Ove starts out gruff and unlikable and more than a bit stereotypical. Then it opens up and becomes something of an epic about ordinary life, touching, funny and engrossing.

Lassgård won’t let you off easy: A scene in which Ove weeps hopelessly before the magnitude of his loneliness will bring tears to the eyes of anyone who has suffered a loss.

Holm tweaks expectations with the way he presents the material, and his grip on the film’s tricky, tragicomic tone is masterful.
